Teacher guide reSolve: Real World Algebra: Quadratic Functions

TLF ID M021855

This sequence of three lessons explores different representations of quadratic functions, with particular emphasis on turning points in quadratic graphs. Students use images of trajectories, inscribe their own curves using Geogebra and then further explore the algebraic representation of their curves. Each lesson is outlined in detail including curriculum links, vocabulary, materials needed, sample answers, discussion points and student resources. This sequence is part of the reSolve: Maths by Inquiry special topic 'Bringing the Real World into Algebra'.

Educational details

Educational value
  • This resource is extremely valuable for the year 10 mathematics content descriptions about connecting algebraic and graphical representations of quadratics. Students manipulate visual, tabular and graphical representations to build conceptual links between various representations of quadratic functions.
  • The resource is also of value for supporting the Information and Communication Technology general capability as students use simulations and digital models to generate data and information to support their understanding of geometry in everyday contexts.
